Undergraduate
Scholarships:
In recent years, thanks to the generosity of faculty, alumni and friends,
the Geography Department has been able to establish a number of funded
activities that benefit Geography students. Below is a brief description
of each fund for your information.
Morris
and Clara Budin Fund: This Fund is used to partially fund a graduate
student assistantship for the academic year. We are hoping to grow this
fund so it is able to fund the assistantship without subsides from other
funds.
Annual
Frazier-Henry Prize: This fund provides annual recognition and a
$200 stipend for the graduating senior deemed the "best" urban
geography/urban planning candidate. The winner is recognized at the
University's annual awards ceremony in May.
Annual
Dr. Shin-Yi and Jane Hsu Award: This award recognizes outstanding scholarly geographic
projects that incorporate the use of geospatial technologies, especially remote sensing. Two
awards, one graduate and one undergraduate, will be given on an annual basis at the discretion
of a standing committee constituted exclusively by Geography faculty. Students will submit
projects for consideration no later than 30 days prior to the conclusion of the Spring semester.
Projects will be evaluated based on originality, creativity and quality.
Applications must be submitted by March 1.
Gorman
Scholarship: This annual scholarship is awarded to the most outstanding
undergraduate major in geography, regardless of specialization. It is
named for a deceased alumnus, Paul Gorman, class of 1973.
Van
Riper Fund: This is a special purpose fund established by Emeritus
Professor Joe and his spouse Betty Van Riper for the purpose of sponsoring
a range of activities organized by the Geography Graduate Student Organization,
as well as a few other special purpose projects.
Financial Support for Graduate School: The Department offers financial
assistance to graduate students on a competitive basis. The University
offers competitive fellowships and graduate workstudy assistantships.
Distinguished Senior Recognition Award : Through the generosity of alumni donations
to the Geography Department, a cash prize will be awarded to a graduating senior with a
GPA of 3.5 or higher. Interested students must submit, to the Honors Committee, an essay
(three pages maximum) describing their area of specialization in geography, their experience
studying geography at Binghamton University, any community or university service they have
been involved in while attending Binghamton University, and future goals -- how they intend
to use their geography degree. The essay must be submitted to the Honors Committee by April 1.
Geography
Graduate Assistantship: The Department offers state-funded assistantships
on an annual basis. These include a $7,600 stipend for the academic
year (10 months) and a full waiver of tuition (state pays the tuition).
These are competitive.
Research
Project Assistantship: When Faculty and Staff receive grants and
contracts to support their research, they sometimes offer graduate students
a research assistantship to assist in the research process. The amount
of these awards vary.
The
Budin-Van Riper Assistantship: The Department also awards one assistantship
per year to a student committed to the study of urban issues. The stipend
is the same as the graduate assistantship mentioned above and a tuition
award is full. This award is a distinction.
Clark
Fellowships: Underrepresented minorities, including geography graduate
students, are eligible for this award. See University requirements and
application procedures.
Workstudy Assistantships: See University description and eligibility.
If
you would like more information on these options and their purpose,
please feel free to contact the Geography Office. We look forward to
hearing from you.
